Experience – what is it?

Experience – what is it?

Experience is not what happens to a man; it is what a man does with what happens to him.”
– Aldous Huxley – author Brave New World.

I think experience can be explained as actions that produce knowledge which has effects on the future.

Experience may be physical, mental, emotional, religious and more.

From my life journey and some readings I understand that experience has two components, what and how. Let me give you an example, when a child touches a heated item for the first time, he or she pulls their hand away, having an immediate painful experience. Each time this child comes in contact with this heated item, he knows not to touch it. The what of this situation is pain, and the how was through a heated item.

Experience seems simply a process of trial and error.

Experience is such a very broad topic. However it is the basis of all knowledge, wisdom, understanding, and meaning.

When I started my sourcing business www.herosourcing.wpengine.com I already had a lot of experience in off-shore manufacturing for my own wholesale business, yet moving from doing it for myself to offering the service to other wholesale customers, was a journey into a somewhat unchartered waters. The experience I gained, sometimes painfully, is of great value to my company today.

Hope this short essay is of value to you and I wish you a journey of painless, valuable experiences.

Wishing you success,
